On 1 July 2026, Dolly Char celebrates 25 years since the business was founded in Lincolnshire.

What began as a local domestic cleaning agency in 2001 later became the foundation for the wider Dolly Char franchise network. During that time, many clients, cleaners, franchisees, colleagues and supporters have played a part in the story.

Although the way people find cleaners and manage their homes has changed considerably over the past 25 years, the original aim behind Dolly Char remains familiar: helping households find reliable, regular support from a cleaner suited to their needs.

Where the Dolly Char story began..

Dolly Char began as a local domestic cleaning agency in Lincolnshire in 2001.

Dolly Char was founded in Lincolnshire in 2001 by Robin and Carol Harrison.

The idea came from a simple problem. Many households wanted regular help around the home but found it difficult to locate a domestic cleaner who was reliable, trustworthy and suited to their individual requirements.

Rather than operating as a conventional cleaning company, Dolly Char developed an agency model that focused on finding, vetting and introducing self-employed local cleaners to clients.

Clients paid their cleaner directly for the work carried out, while Dolly Char provided the arrangement, introduction and ongoing agency support.

This clear and transparent structure remains an important part of the Dolly Char service today.

Where did the name Dolly Char come from?

The name Dolly Char has both a personal meaning and a connection to traditional household cleaning.

“Dolly” was the nickname of Carol’s late father, so including it in the business name was a tribute to him. It also happens to recall the traditional dolly tubs once used for washing clothes – now make fantastic looking garden planters!.

“Char” is an old-fashioned term associated with domestic cleaning work.

Together, the two words created a distinctive and memorable name that combined a personal family connection with the service the business provided.

Over time, Dolly Char became much more than a name. It became a family-run business recognised by clients, cleaners and franchisees in different parts of the country.

From a local cleaning agency to a franchise network

The original Lincolnshire business developed during its early years, and in 2004 the Dolly Char model was expanded into franchising.

This allowed other people to establish their own local Dolly Char businesses using the same core approach:

Steve joins Dolly Char

Steve Curtis joined Dolly Char in 2009.

Steve Curtis joined Dolly Char in 2009 and is now the familiar day-to-day contact for many Lincolnshire clients and cleaners.

Since then, he has become the familiar day-to-day contact for many Dolly Char clients and cleaners across Lincolnshire. For a large number of current clients, Steve is the person they have spoken to when arranging their cleaning, discussing changes or asking for support.

Over the years, Steve has also been involved in supporting the wider Dolly Char business and helping franchisees establish and develop services in their own areas.

Today, he continues to manage the Lincolnshire operation while helping the business adapt to changing technology, marketing and customer expectations.

What has changed since 2001?

A great deal has changed in 25 years.

In the early days, local advertising relied heavily on leaflets, newspaper adverts, shop windows and community noticeboards. Clients usually contacted the business by telephone, and much of the administration was completed manually.

The Dolly Char branding has also evolved over the years, with new logos, websites and marketing materials reflecting each stage of the business.

The basic need, however, has not changed. Households still want somebody dependable who can provide regular help and make keeping on top of the home feel more manageable.

What does Dolly Char provide today?

Dolly Char’s main service remains regular weekly and fortnightly domestic cleaning.

General house cleaning is at the heart of most visits, including tasks such as:

• cleaning kitchens and bathrooms;

• mopping;
• and keeping regularly used areas under control.

Although the Dolly Char name later expanded through franchising, the business began as a local family-run operation and retains that identity today.

The people behind the business have always been closely involved in its daily running, from speaking with clients and interviewing cleaners to developing websites, creating adverts and supporting franchisees.

That personal involvement is an important part of what distinguishes Dolly Char from a large, anonymous cleaning company.

Clients are not simply allocated a cleaning slot. The aim is to understand what support they need and find a cleaner who is well suited to the arrangement.
